Russian Navy says Black Sea Fleet not on "high alert"
06.02.2009
News that the ships of Russia's Black Sea Fleet have being put on "high alert" has nothing to do with reality, Captain 1st Class Igor Dygalo, the head of the Information Service of the Russian Navy, said on Thursday.
News has appeared in some media outlets, citing members of the families of servicemen of the Fleet, that crewmembers of warships have been restricted access to shore in Sebastopol and that the warships of the Fleet are ready to immediately sail out to sea. According to the same media sources, people in this Ukrainian city are almost certain that the Black Sea Fleet has been put on high alert in relation to the fact that Georgia is stirring up tensions in the Caucasus.
"The forces of the Fleet are at their usual level of readiness. The forces on duty, as required, are at their necessary level of readiness," Said Dygalo.
Dygalo noted that information of dubious source often appears in the media regarding the Black Sea Fleet and that such information creates uneasiness in the zones of deployment of the Fleet.
