NS Kazan fired in Severodvinsk

NS Kazan fired in Severodvinsk 07.10.2009
Ignition of insulants happened in nuclear submarine Kazan being utilized at OJSC Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center in Severodvinsk on Tuesday, informs the shipyard's press service.

"Ignition was caused by gas-cutting works performed at the forebody while disassembling sonar system. By reason of inflammable insulants stored in the compartment, ignition turned to fire", said press service to Interfax.

According to press service, firefighters instantly arrived at the accident site and by 11.30 pm the fire was localized and fire spots were isolated.

"Due to design features of NS Kazan, some fire spots are almost inaccessible for extinguishing. Firefighters continue to liquidate smolder spots", said press service official.

"Persons involved in utilization works were evacuated in timely and orderly manner. There are no injured people and financial damage to the shipyard either", underlined press service. "Measurements of environment status confirmed that the accident was not dangerous to life and health. However, hazardous substances were discharged in air, but level of maximum allowable concentration was not exceeded. Radiation background is normal".

"Nuclear fuel was unloaded from submarine's reactors in April 2009. The vessel does not constitute hazard of radioactive contamination", says the message.
