Ukrainian corvette Ternopil which recently sailed off Sevastopol to attend Operation Active Endeavour to be held in the Mediterranean Sea has arrived to NATO naval base Souda Bay (Crete, Greece).
The ship has successfully sailed through two straits and three seas, reports onboard correspondent Snr. Lt. Pavel Parfeniuk. According to him, while passing the Black Sea the corvette's crew carried out tasks of Operation Black Sea Harmony, having questioned three civil vessels and transferred the results to Ukrainian Navy's National Contact Point.
Mediterranean part of the cruise started in severe meteorological conditions. Sailors faced the storm right after the ship left the basing site. The crew carried out all appropriate activities to prevent emergencies – deck equipment was fixed, and it was not allowed to get on the top deck.
Mariners performed a number of exercises during the cruise, such as repelling air attacks, search and tracing of a submarine; improved skills on ship orientation; carried out damage control drill; conducted antiaircraft, antisubmarine, and antimine trainings, practiced watchmen duties. Right after passing Dardanelles, search party which will take part in Operation Active Endeavour also held a drill.
During the stay at the base, the ship's crew and search party will once again practice all appropriate activities and install special equipment compatible with international automated vessel identification system.
The cruise of Ternopil will presumably last 45 days.
