American expert calculated number and cost of warships in 20-year prospect

American expert calculated number and cost of warships in 20-year prospect 20.05.2011
Text: Military Parity
In the nearest 20 years India wants to invest $46,960 mln in national navy and build 101 new warships beginning from destroyers and ending with nuclear submarines, said Bob Nugent, naval analyst and vice president of AMI International (USA). The expert appeared at the preliminaries of the international naval exhibition held in May 18-22.

According to the analyst, India's investment in defense shipbuilding will surpass expenses of China which intends to appropriate $23,990 mln (113 warships) for analogous purpose.

Indian naval program will be primarily oriented at construction of nuclear-powered submarines, the Chinese one – at realization of aircraft carrier program. Lack of production capacities at Mumbai shipyard can force India to reduce number of French Scorpene class submarines planned for construction under license from six to three. Overall share of India's naval expenses can make 27.8% of overall spendings of Asia-Pacific countries. Summary cost of Indian and Chinese naval programs will exceed investments of all non-NATO countries worldwide, even Russia.

Other large investors among Asia-Pacific states are Australia ($14 bln), Indonesia ($7 bln), Taiwan ($16 bln), Pakistan ($2.85 bln), and Singapore ($1.74 bln). Within 3 nearest years, $69.1 bln will be spent by the regional countries for construction of 340 warships. Other 193 ships ($71 bln) will be built there in 2014-2019; supposedly, 236 warships ($28.2 bln) are to be constructed in 2020-2030.

As of naval expenses, Asia-Pacific countries will yield only to the US which plan to produce 505 warships spending $280 bln in the next 20 years, but outrun European NATO countries which are about to spend $153.3 bln for construction of 581 ships. Asia-Pacific countries intend to build 769 warships to the amount of $168.3 bln in the mentioned period.

To compare, within the next 20 years Latin American and Caribbean countries will spend $24.8 bln to acquire 292 warships; Middle East and North African countries – $38.2 bln for 453 ships; non-NATO European countries – $8.8 bln for 61 ships; African countries southward Sahara desert – $3.1 bln for 41 warships.

In 20-year prospect Russia plans to build and purchase 84 warships to the amount of $22.1 bln.
