Pirates Captured Ukrainian-Crewed Tanker

15.09.2011
Text: URA-Inform
Somali pirates hijacked a tanker in the Gulf of Guinea with 23 crewmembers on board including Ukrainian sailors, reports online URA-Inform.

The incident happened in the morning of Sept 14 at 62 nautical miles off Benin's capital city. The Cyprus-flagged tanker Mattheos I became the pirates' loot.

Pirates forced the crew to go on board their vessel and sailed away. Prior to that, the tanker sent a distress signal and has not got on radio contact since that time.

According to preliminary information, there were citizens of Philippines, Ukraine, Spain, and Peru on board the tanker.
