India plans procurement of five midget submarines

Indian Navy will purchase five midget submarines for special operations, informed All India Radio.
Indian marines also plan to use those subs for tracking suspicious vessels inshore waters.
Yet naval authorities requested Indian shipyards for commercial offers to construct five such vessels, said sources in Indian Defense Ministry.
Procurement plan of midget subs came up with Indian Maritime Security Program after Pakistani terrorist assaults caused 166 deaths on Mumbai in Nov 2008. Ten armed militants reached the city on hijacked fishing vessel. They jumped on inflatable motorboats few kilometers off the coast and moored in Mumbai downtown.
