Voitenko: new weapon is tested on pirates

09.11.2009
The Gulf of Aden is used as a testing range for new types of weapon, said Mikhail Voitenko, editor of Maritime Bulletin, having added that the tests are secret.

According to him, Active Denial System (ADS) also called "pain ray" is being tested there.

"Not so much research works are being executed in the Gulf of Aden as technical ones: the weapon is improved on the basis of empirical employment", explained Mikhail Voitenko, editor-in-chief of Maritime Bulletin - Sovfrakht.

It was also reported about active testing of non-lethal optical distracters and HEMI (Human Electro-Muscular Incapacitation) grenades affecting human with non-lethal electric discharge.

Use of laser distracters by Spanish military was exactly what led to death and injury of two sailors during release of hijacked Marathon cargo ship with Ukrainian crew aboard, supposes Voitenko.

WIKIPEDIA REFERENCE

Active Denial System (ADS) also known as "pain ray" is one of the weapon systems developed under Controlled Effect Weapon Program and constitutes transmitter directing electromagnetic oscillations in millimetric wave band at a frequency of 94 GHz what affects humans with a short-term shock.

The action is based on the fact that 83% of this radiation is absorbed by skin. The effect is called "prompt and highly motivated escape behavior".
