04.12.2009 First Indian nuclear-powered submarine Arihant will be entirely completed and commissioned in the nearest two years. That was said by Admiral Nirmal Verma, Indian Navy Commander-in-Chief, informs The Times of India. Arihant was put afloat on July 26, 2009.
According to Mr. Verma, endurance of the new sub will be only limited by capabilities of its crew and provisions. The sub is currently passes a number of sea trials to define operability of all equipment installed.
Construction start-date of the Indian submarine Arihant is uncertain. Soviet Project 670 Skat sub was taken as a basis for it. Supposedly, displacement of Indian nuc sub will make 6,000 tonnes. Hull length of Arihant is 110 meters. The sub will be armed with six 533-mm torpedo tubes and 12 K-15 Sagarika ballistic missiles.
Admiral Nirmal Verma previously said that the first Indian aircraft carrier would be launched in 2010 and commissioned into Indian Navy in 2014, reports India Today. In total, India plans to build three such ships. Their displacement will make 40,000 tonnes and maximum speed – 28 knots. The carrier was laid down in February 2009 at Cochin Shipyard. It will become the biggest combat ship ever built at Indian shipyards.
