First Indian-made SSBN to be commissioned in 2 years 09.02.2010
First Indian-made SSBN Arihant will be commissioned in two years after trials, informs Indian Defence Review citing Admiral Nirmal Verma, Indian Navy Commander.

Presently, Indian Navy and Defense Research and Development Organization are dealing with an array of issues related to approbation of innovative technologies and development of documents regulating service of the sub, underlined the admiral.

During trials of Arihant Indian experts obtain valuable experience necessary to develop national program of nuclear-powered submarines, added Mr. Verma.

SSBN Arihant is the first Indian nuclear-powered submarine of the same-named class. She was designed with the participation of Russian experts on the basis of Soviet project 670 Skat. Date of laying down is unknown. SSBN Arihant was launched on July 26, 2009. Displacement is about 6,000 tons; length is 111 meters; beam is 15 meters; draft is 11 meters; crew is 100.
