London to send warships to rescue stranded Britons
19.04.2010
The British government will send three Royal Navy warships to bring home Britons stranded overseas by disruption to flights caused by the eruption of a volcano in Iceland, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said on Monday.
Two aircraft carriers, Ark Royal and Ocean, will be sent across the English Channel. The government is also ready to provide one more ship if the situation does not improve.
"I expect Ocean to be in the Channel today. I expect the Ark Royal to moving towards the Channel later," - Brown said after a meeting of the government's emergency committee, known as COBRA.
He also said the ash cloud had created "the biggest challenge to our aviation transport network for many years".
