Ship crew breaks free from Somali pirates 02.06.2010

The crew of a North-Korean-flagged freighter have freed themselves and their ship from captivity with Somali pirates. The effort involved violence and left up to nine pirates dead. One crewmember is seriously injured.

Reports about this have been coming from maritime authorities in East Africa and naval sources in the European Union.

The ship is owned by a Libyan company. It was captured on the 3rd of February as it was crossing the Gulf of Aden on its way from Ukraine to India. There were 17 crew on board, all from Romania or Libya.
