JSC Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard (St. Petersburg) laid down a Project 636 diesel electric submarine for a foreign orderer on Tuesday, reports press service of the city administration.

Among attendants of the keel-laying ceremony were Ivan Goncharenko, deputy director general of FSUE Rosoboronexport, Andrei Diachkov, director general of Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering, Vladimir Aleksandrov, director general of JSC Admiralteyskie Verfi, and Mikhail Oseyevsky, Vice Governor of St. Petersburg.

The press release does not specify which country is the orderer.

The analogous submarine for Russian Navy was laid down at the shipyard on Aug 20.

Project 636 submarines are development of Project 877EKM diesel electric subs. The distinguished features of the project are increased submerged speed – up to 20 knots, longer operating range in snorkel mode, and lower noise level. Combat effectiveness of a Project 636 submarine is substantially improved by Club-S attack missile system.

JSC Admiralteyskie Verfi is a part of JSC Western Shipbuilding Center which in its turn is subordinated to JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation.
