St. Petersburg city administration arranged memorial activities related to the Blockade Victims Remembrance Day; naval servicemen took part in ceremonies as well. Wreath-laying ceremony was held at Piskarevskoye memorial cemetery on Sept 8. The ceremony was attended by St. Petersburg governor Valentina Matvienko, Gen. Col. Bakhin, Western Military District Commander, and Capt 1 rank V. Privalov, acting Leningrad Naval Base Commander. Memorial events were also conducted in other parts of the city. For instance, mariners of Leningrad Naval Base came to Kronshtadt cemetery to pay the tribute to the memory of people died. Sixty four years ago on Sept 8 the blockade noose was tightened around Leningrad. The 872-day long blockade held by German, Finnish, and Spanish troops finished on Jan 27, 1944.
