Two Project 636 Kilo diesel electric subs built at Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard have been delivered to Algerian Navy, reported ITAR-TASS from Euronaval-2010 citing Sergei Smirnov, deputy director general of Rubin Design Bureau.

According to him, "the first sub sailed under its own power; the second one still stays in Kronshtadt".

According to World Arms Trade Analytic Center, procurement contract for two Project 636 diesel electric subs was a part of arms delivery package agreement tied with Algeria early in 2006. First sub was laid down at Admiralteyskie Verfi in 2006, the second one – in 2007. By estimate of experts, the contract cost was about $450-600 mln.

With delivery of two Project 636 Kilo diesel subs, Algerian Navy will have 4 submarines in inventory. Earlier on, in 1987-1988 two Project 877EKM diesel electric subs were delivered to Algeria. The contract for their modernization was signed in summer 2005. This contract was implemented in 2006-2009.

Purchase of additional diesel electric subs is possible in the context of further modernization of Algerian submarine fleet. In particular, Algeria may order Amur class diesel subs.

Among other naval arms agreements recently signed with Algeria, one should mention modernization contracts for two Project 1234E guided missile corvettes (2007 and 2008) and two Project 1159T corvettes (2007 and 2008).
