Baltic Fleet (BF) Commander Vice Admiral Viktor Chirkov congratulated servicemen of BF Naval Engineer Service headed by Col. Oleg Pavlov on the Engineer Troops Day.

According to BF Commander's congratulatory letter, Baltic Fleet engineer units excellently carry out engineer support tasks and continue old traditions of naval engineers. Servicemen of BF engineer service and marine units performed combat tasks in Chechen Republic and displayed high professionalism, heroism and courage. Four of them – Snr. Seaman Roman Loginov, Seaman Alexander Bauer, Sergeant Nikolai Barsukov, and Seaman Vladimir Fedotov – failed to return home and were posthumously awarded by the Order of Courage.

In 1701 Peter the Great ordered to establish artillery school in Moscow to train artillery officers and military engineers. The history of engineer troops started in that day.

The Engineer Troops Day was founded by presidential decree No. 1370 on September 18, 1996 and is annually celebrated in Russian Armed Forces on Jan 21 in recognition of battle merits done by all generations of military engineers – from the Peter's time to this day. Mine defense, minefield breaching, preparation of military routes, provision of river crossings, mine clearance – that is by no means complete list of engineer troops' unique tasks.

Presently, engineer units successfully perform combat training missions and also carry out an important task – destruction of time-expired munitions. Explosives crews have destructed over 8,000 tons of munitions only since Apr 2010.

Summarizing the year of 2010, the best engineer unit in Baltic Fleet was independent naval engineer battalion commanded by Lt. Col. Igor Grishin.
