Launching ceremony of research expedition vessel Akademik Treshnikov will take place on Tuesday on March 29, reports the Central Navy Portal referring to JSC Admiralteyskie Verfi.

The Project 22280 scientific vessel was developed by Krylov Research Institute and Baltsudproekt Design Bureau specially for Antarctic expeditions.
State contract for construction of a new research expedition vessel for Russian Antarctic Expedition was signed by JSC Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard and Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Rosgidromet) on Dec 1, 2008. The ship was laid down on slipways of Admiralteyskie Verfi in June 2009, hullnumber 02440.
The expedition vessel was named after academician Alexei Treshnikov – an outstanding researcher of Arctic and Antarctic and one of the Presidents of Russian Geographical Society. According to the project, the vessel's deadweight is 5,580 tons; length is 133.6 meters; beam is 23 meters; draft is 8.5 meters; overall power of diesel electric plant is 16 MW; cruising range is 15,000 miles; max speed is about 16 knots; icebreaking speed is 2 knots (when ice thickness is over 1 meter); 2 heliports for ice reconnaissance and transport helicopters; endurance is 45 days; crew is 59 men; number of passengers (expedition) is 80. To process results of oceanologic researches, atmospheric sounding, and other natural experiments, the vessel is equipped with eight hi-tech laboratories.
The ship was supposed to shift Finnish-built vessel Akademik Fedorov which has been operated by Rosgidromet for years, but it was decided to overhaul the latter one with replacement of power-generating, navigational, and scientific equipment. As a result, lifetime of the ice-resistant diesel electric ship will be 10 years longer.
Two ice-class expedition ships will help to delimit outer frontier of Russia's continental shelf in Arctic with the view to reason the claims addressed to UN maritime law commission and present new results of geological and geophysical surveys at the ocean bed.
After commissioning, Akademik Treshnikov will be operated by Rosgidromet's Arctic and Antarctic Scientific Research Institute.
Delivery date of the vessel is Sept 2011.
