Solemn opening ceremony of the reconstructed monument to the crew of Northern Fleet (NF) diesel submarine S-80 was held on Oct 19 at Olenya Bay settlement.

The ceremony was attended by NF top-ranking officers, submarine division command, Murmansk regional officials, and representatives of local administration.

NF Deputy Commander for personnel affairs Rear Admiral Anatoly Minakov said appearing at the meeting: "Today we pay honors to all naval servicemen fully completed their duty, to those who in peacetime served hard for the sake of our Motherland even unto death".

This year it was 50th anniversary of S-80 submarine's wreck. The tragedy happened on Jan 21, 1961 was the first post-war loss of Northern Fleet. Sixty eight submariners died in the accident. The sub was found only in 1968; the unique submarine salvage operation started on June 9, 1969. It was the world's first operation of picking up an 800-ton submarine from almost 200-meter depth. Dead submariners were buried in Olenya Bay settlement.
