The solemn launching ceremony of hydrographic ship Viktor Faleyev was held on Nov 12 at Vostochnaya Verf shipyard (Vladivostok); the ship is meant for Pacific Fleet (PF), reports RIA Novosti.

The new ship named after known PF scientist Viktor Faleyev was launched on 155-th anniversary of PF Hydrographic Service. The launching ceremony was attended by shipbuilders, naval servicemen, the fleet's command and veterans.

The new hydrographic ship will head along seashore of Russia's Far East, reports RIA Novosti referring to PF Commander's press secretary Capt 1 rank Roman Martov. The tug's crew will place radio-navigational buoys and maintain trouble-free operation of numerous navigational systems at Russian Pacific coast.

Martov reminded that hydrographic service was established at Pacific Ocean by order of Russian Emperor Alexander II on Oct 31, 1856. It was responsible for lighthouses, pilotage, and secure navigation.

"Pacific Fleet's hydrographers have made considerable contribution to survey of harbors, bays, and anchor sites, and drawing of detailed maps. Having long endurance, PF hydrographic vessels carried out numerous long-range expeditions with scientists on board conducting various ocean researches", Martov said.
