Naval mariners and community of Kronshtadt took part in traditional memorable action and paid honors to the crew of Russian destroyer Stereguschiy. The event was associated with 108-th anniversary of the ship's legendary battle against Japanese warships.

Kronshtadt Paid Honors to Legendary Destroyer Stereguschiy

Participants laid wreaths at the Monument to Stereguschiy in Aleksandrovsky Garden; then the prayer service was done in honor of died crewmembers of the destroyers.
The memorable ceremony was attended by crewmen of present-day corvette Stereguschiy stationed in Leningrad Naval Base, descendants of sailors served on the legendary destroyer and participants of the Tsushima Battle, representatives of public associations and patriotic organizations.
Stereguschiy is well-known name in Russian Navy. Early in 20-th century, that was a name of destroyer in Port Arthur Squadron. On March 10, 1904 Stereguschiy entered a loosing battle against superior Japanese force consisting of four destroyers and two cruisers. Due to failures in machine space, Stereguschiy could only defend. Delivering precision fire, the Russian ship managed to damage all four Japanese destroyers and forced two of them to disengage. After an explosion on board Stereguschiy, the Japanese took her in tow to bring the ship as a trophy. However, survived Russian sailors flooded their ship. Stereguschiy was sinking with proudly fluttered St. Andrew's Flag.
