Moscow Complains on US Arming Georgia

Russia expressed concern over the US supplying Georgian military units deployed in Afghanistan with armaments, said Alexander Lukashevich, spokesman for Russian Foreign Ministry.
"We addressed a note to American embassy expressing concern", he said at the briefing in Moscow, reports Interfax.
Lukashevich reminded that last year US Embassy informed Russia about Washington's intention to equip Georgian troops deployed in Afghanistan with small arms and armored vehicles.
"We consider important that armaments used by Georgian troops in Afghanistan will not appear in Georgia", stressed the diplomat.
He expressed an opinion that often Georgia's participation in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan was used to cover remilitarization of Georgia.
"Saakashvili's regime may use those arms against Abkhazia and South Ossetia including Russian citizens residing there", pointed out Lukashevich.
He emphasized in this regard that any military cooperation with Georgia was open to many hazards to peace and security in the region.
Lukashevich emphasized that Russia repeatedly "drew attention of US State Department to frequent calls of US Navy's ships including those equipped will Aegis system at Georgian ports".
"Whatever explanations are given, it is apparent that such visits are taken by Georgian administration as encouragement of its revanchist ambitions", stressed the diplomat.
