Crewmen of training ship Perekop (Leningrad Naval Base) suffered in the incident during gun firing drill are still under treatment in the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg. Their health status is described as satisfactory, an insider in the academy told Central Navy Portal.

Recall that the incident happened on July 31 when training ship Perekop was performing gun firing drill in the Gulf of Finland. According to official theory, five sailors got on the top deck during the firing drill with the view to take pictures.

At that time stern gun mounts AK-230 were firing at dummy sea mine. One of shells hit the portside boat davit, just where the sailors stood. One of them, Nikita Mitrofanov was lethally wounded in the head by a shell fragment. The rest sailors were luckier, only one of them got serious penetrating wound in the hip. The firing drill was immediately stopped; the sufferers received first medical aid.

Leningrad Naval Base command was informed on the incident. A motorboat was dispatched from Kronshtadt to deliver injured personnel to hospital faster. Unfortunately, the 20-year old sailor Nikita Mitrofanov died in ambulance car despite all actions taken. The rest sufferers were brought to the 35-th Naval Hospital in Kronshtadt at first, and then transferred to the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg.

Although health of the sailors causes no concern, even 3 weeks after the incident they are still in the medical academy. Nikolai Sapunov passes treatment in the general surgery clinic, Andrei Puishis is in the military traumatology and orthopedics clinic, Alexei Davydov and Andrei Golyakov are in the field surgery clinic.

As of Aug 20, all of them are in satisfactory condition.

Military procuracy initiated a criminal case against commanding officer of training ship Perekop Capt 2 Rank Sergei Bor in accordance with RF Criminal Code (violation of arms handling rules resulted in death). Also, defense ministry set a special board to investigate causes of the incident.

Having failed to stand the stress, Capt 2 Rank Sergei Bor was taken to the hospital with hypertensive crisis.
