At the Adanak Test Range in Dagestan, servicemen of Caspian Flotilla (CF) coast-based mobile missile system Bal jointly with artillery batteries of marine units started coast defense drills to practice counter-landing activities and engagement of "enemy" surface ships.

About 100 servicemen and somewhat 20 automotive and special-purpose vehicles are exercising preparation and direction of missile strikes in conditions of underway deployment, reduced personnel strength, rapid change of battle formation, in mountains, day and night.

At the end of the field drills, CF missilemen jointly exercised with a ship strike group. Operators of the missile battalion command and control center had to detect by radar and localize a sea target over 50 km away at sea. Crews of missile launchers destroyed the detected surface ship by simulated missile strike.

Missile system Bal is capable to engage targets at the distance up to 120 km, day and night and at any weather conditions.

Fire power of Bal missile battalion makes possible to break up mission accomplishment of a large surface strike group, a landing force or a convoy.

Specific feature of the system lies in the fact that its launchers can be deployed in covered positions at up to 10 km inland.

Personnel of CF coast-based mobile missile system Bal will take part in the Caucasus-2012 large-scale strategic exercise to be held in Sept 2012.
