Cruiser Avrora May Become St. Petersburg's Symbol

According to the city press service, draft law on amendments to St. Petersburg Charter providing legislative attachment of the city symbol title to cruiser Avrora was kicked off by MP Vladimir Dmitriev (Communist Party of the Russian Federation).
Members of the city assembly's permanent commission on state authority organization, local government and administrative-territorial system discussed this initiative but failed to reach a compromise and redirected that issue to other MPs.
The future of cruiser Avrora which de-facto is only an exact copy of the legendary ship became in question when Avrora lost status of the Russian Navy's number one ship in 2010.
Veterans of the Navy addressed a letter to St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko asking not to decommission the cruiser but preserve her as an auxiliary ship. Late in June, members of St. Petersburg Assembly appealed to president Putin with request to give back a title of the number one ship to cruiser Avrora and put back her military crew.
However, Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief ADM Viktor Chirkov declared late in July 2012 that "Avrora is and will be under supervision of the Central Naval Museum".
