Future of Ukrainian shipbuilding industry directly depends on the cooperation with Russia, said Valery Babich, well-known Ukrainian shipbuilder and former director of design bureau developing aircraft carriers at the Chernomorsky Shipyard (Nikolayev, Ukraine), reports ARMS-TASS.

According to him, south-based shipyards have been always making a great contribution in development of Russian Imperial Navy and then Soviet Navy. In Soviet era, about 40 percent ships for the Navy were built in Ukraine, except for nuclear-powered submarines.
"Presently, Russia lacks production capacities to revive its Navy, while Ukraine has seven large shipyards. Being capable to build battleships, cruisers, submarines, and aircraft carriers, the Chernomorsky Shipyard in Nikolayev is the biggest of them", pointed out Valery Babich.
Nikolayev shipyards have huge technical potential, the staff is also trained here, in the National Shipbuilding University (formerly the well-known Nikolayev Shipbuilding Institute), Babich added.
"Historically and technologically, Nikolayev shipyards were established as manufactures producing ships with sophisticated military equipment. That is the best development direction for them. I think, future of our shipbuilding industry lies in cooperation with Russia", stressed Valery Babich.
