Multi role nuclear submarine Omsk delivered to the Pacific Fleet
08/14/2008A third-generation, multi role nuclear submarine, Omsk, project 949-A, delivered to the Pacific Fleet in a solemn ceremony at the city of Bolshoy Kamen to commence service.
As reported by the Vladivostok newspaper, the far eastern Zvezda plant was 8 months early in completing the major overhaul of this rocket cruiser. After completing underway trials, the submarine will head to Kamchatka, where she will serve as part of a nuclear submarine group, based in the Avachin Bay.
Earlier, the Zvezda plant overhauled and returned to service Svyatoy Georgiy Pobedonosec, a strategic missile submarine. It also prepared several Pacific Fleet surface combatants for service at sea, as Vladivostok notes. Omsk recently took part in the Pacific Fleet Navy Day parade. Today, the shipyard is also working on Irkutsk, Omsk's sister ship, which was built in the city of Severodvinsk, in the Archangelsk district. All shipyard work is being financed by the Russian government.
The Vostok plant is getting ready to deliver a new, project 971-U (Shuka-B), nuclear submarine, built by the Amur shipyard under orders from the Indian Navy. Vladivostok learned of this from unofficial sources. The submarine was moved from Komskomolsk-on-Amur to the Primorsk's city of Bolshoy Kamen for the final work and underway trials. The agreement to build and lease this submarine to the Indian Navy for a ten year term, was signed by Moscow and Deli back in 2004. The sum of the contract is $600 million US. The Indian crew will commission the submarine for service in the second half of 2009 under the name of Chakra.
