Reductions in submarine staff
11/24/2008 The number of officers on multipurpose nuclear submarines could be reduced as part of a reform of the Russian Northern Fleet. According to an officer from the Gadzhiyevo Naval base, the cut back will affect officers on the newest and most technologically advanced attack submarine of the Russian Navy, the Akula-class attack submarines.As part of the reforma of the Russian Northern Fleet, the number of officers on multipurpose nuclear submarines could be reduced, says one the officers affected by the cut backs, to the news agency Interfax. According to the officer, the command at the Gadzhiyevo Naval base, where a division of Akula-class submarines is deployed, has already informed the staff about the upcoming reductions. The cut backs will affect both younger officers and engineers aboard the submarines, including staff from the unit responsible for the nuclear reactor.
The manpower cuts are part of a bigger reform of the Russian Armed Forces.
The Akula class submarine is a nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) first deployed by the Soviet Navy in 1986. Akula incorporates a double hull system that increases the strength reserve and is able to dive deeper than any other modern SSN. It is also the quietest Russian nuclear attack submarine. According to Wikipedia, six Akula-class submarines are based in Gadzhiyevo.
