Cyprus authorities seize Iranian ship loaded with weapons

02/02/2009
Cyprus authorities seized the Monchegorsk, an Iranian cargo ship en route to Syria with a cargo of weapons, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Friday.

Cyprus customs authorities uncovered artillery rounds, rockets and other weapons in the hold of the boat during an inspection at the port of Limassol.

Israeli authorities have said they suspect the cargo was intended for Hezbollah, the Shiite Islamic militia, or other Islamists in the Gaza strip.

Two weeks ago, a U.S. navy ship stopped the same Monchegorsk, a boat flying the Cyprus flag en route to Syria from Iran, for an inspection. The inspection uncovered a cargo of weapons, but the crew of the U.S. ship had no authority to seize the cargo ship.
