02/03/2009
The Russian K-199-class submarine Voronezh of the Northern Fleet will undergo modernization at the Zvezdochka shipyards in Severodvinsk.

“The submarine has been brought to the docks of the shipyards. In the course of a year, work to determine the amount of work needed for repairs and modernization will be conducted,” the press center of the Zvezdochka shipyards announced today.

The shipyards will launch complete modernization of Antei-, Granit-, and Bars-class submarine in 2010, according to the general director of Zvezdochka, Vladimir Nikitin. “We are set to begin intensive work to prepare the dockyard for work on these subs,” Nikitin noted.

The Voronezh was build at the Sevmash dockyard in 1988. It is a multipurpose submarine of the 949A design. Submarines of this class have a length of 155 meter, a water displacement of 18,000 tonnes, can dive to 480 meters, can develop a maximum speed of 33 knots, and have a crew of 130. The 949-class submarines are loaded with 24 Granit antiship missiles.
