Baltic Fleet officer wins gold at World Unifight Championship

02/06/2009
The 9th World Unifight Championship took place in Russia’s Kaliningrad at the end of last year. Athletes from the special services and armed forces of many countries compete in this international completion, which has been taking place regularly since 2000. More than 41 countries applied to compete in the 2008 championship.

Captain Andrei Zybin, a representative of the Russian Baltic Fleet, competed in the under 95-kg category and won a hard-fought victory against a representative of the special services of Russia’s Interior Forces, Shamil Mogamedov of Moscow. The score was 4:1 for Andrei Zybin.

Zybin’s victory had a decisive impact on the overall standings, allowing the Russian team to come up ahead of the remaining ones.

Another championship will take place this year in Karlov Vary in the Czech Republic. The competitions in unifight include an obstacles course that includes such elements as the “wall,” “walking on two hands,” the “little wall,” the “tunnel,” the “grid,” rope-dropping, knife-throwing and shooting from a pneumatic pistol. A 5-round hand-to-hand combat caps the competitions.
