Pacific Fleet preparing to meet Defense of Motherland Day

02/20/2009
Feverish preparations are underway in Russia’s Far East region in anticipation of Defense of Motherland Day. This is one of the most important celebrations in this region, which for long years was Russia’s main advanced post in the Pacific Ocean region. Russia’s most powerful fleet - the Pacific Fleet - is based in Kamchatka, Khabarovsk, and the Primorie region.

A month of military-patriotic education for young people has been underway here since January in the framework of celebrations for Defense of Motherland Day. The main goal of the action is to raise the prestige of the army in the eyes of young people.

A number of events are scheduled, beginning on February 18, at the main bases of the Pacific Fleet, including the celebration of veterans, excursions for servicemen to the Military-Historical Museum of the Pacific Fleet, to the Vladivostok Krepost museum, to the C-56 submarine, the Voroshilov Battery, and open houses at various units of the Fleet. Celebrations will take place at all places of deployment of the Fleet in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka, Viliuchinsk, Zavety Ilicha,, and Fokino.

Celebrations will begin in Vladivostok on February 23 with the raising of the flag on the ships of the Fleet and the laying of wreaths and flowers at monuments to defenders of the motherland. The command of the Fleet, regional, and city officials will attend the laying of flowers at the eternal flame at the Battle Glory of Pacific Fleet Servicemen memorial complex.

Meeting between crews of various warships and veterans will also take place on February 23. Various sweepstakes will be organized in the central part of the capital of the Primorie region.
