Fire in decommissioned submarine
06/26/2009An ignition in some rubber covering the front part of the submarine Orenburg caused a fire that lasted for nearby two hours Thursday morning at the Zvezdochka yard in Severodvinsk.
The fire started during work on cutting the hull of the submarine. There were no casualties and no damage to the shipyard itself, Zvezdochka reports at their website.
The submarine Orenburg is in its last stage of dismantlement and the yard says there is no danger of chemical or radiation pollution from the rest of the submarines' hull.
Orenburg was originally one of the Northern fleets Yankee-class submarines built in the 1970ties and carried strategic nuclear missiles. The submarine was then rebuilt in Severodvinsk in the 1980ties into a special purpose submarine aimed for research works and studying the world oceans, physical fields of the earth and sea bottom in the interest of the navy and national economy, according to the design bureau Rubin in St. Petersburg. Orenburg was commissioned again in 1991 and served its purpose for several years.
