President Medvedev visited Sevmash, inspected Yury Dolgoruky
07/05/2009Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev yesterday visited the Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk, where he inspected construction of Russia's new state-of-the-art nuclear submarines.
At Sevmash, Russia's largest shipbuilding-complex, Mr. Medvedev was guided by Director General Nikolay Kalistratov, who proudly showed the president two of the coming spear points of The Russian Navy – the nuclear powered attack submarine Severodvinsk and the nuclear powered strategic submarine Aleksander Nevsky, a press release from Sevmash reports.
Aleksander Nevsky is the second submarine in the Borey class to be built at Sevmash. The first vessel, Yury Dolgoruky, is currently undergoing sea trials in the White Sea. President Medvedev was taken out to the test area by Head of the Russian Navy Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky. The moved in quite close to the submarine, which was in surface position, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.
After the tour, President Medvedev held a conference about future development of Russia's submarine forces.
- Within 2020 we will have obtain building the core of Russia's new naval forces, the president said. - Our new submarines will be equipped with modern weapons, they will be able to meet competition and they have to match or exceed their foreign counterparts.
President Medvedev was also shown one of the civilian projects Sevmash is working on – the ice resistant oil platform Prirazlomnaya. This giant structure will allow producing 20,000 tons of oil daily at air temperatures down to -40 °C.
