Russian mariners tested newest submersible
10/08/2009 Source:Drill with Navy's oldest rescue vessel Kommuna finished at Black Sea Fleet; in the course of training mariners tested newest rescue submersible, says information summary of Navy Press Service received by RIA Novosti on Thursday.
According to the Navy, rescue vessel Kommuna (named Volkhov until Jan 31, 1922) which construction started at Putilovsky shipyard in St. Petersburg in 1912 was put afloat in 1913.
"During sea drill, rescue vessel Kommuna accomplished a number of tasks scheduled in combat training plan. Among those was launching newest remote-controlled unmanned rescue submersible Pantera+", says the summary.
The submersible was tested at a depth of 64 meters, says the document.
Displacement of Kommuna vessel is 3 100 t. Length is 96 m, beam is 13.2 m, draft is 3.7 m. Max speed is 10 knots. Crew is 250 men. Rescue submersible Pantera+ weights about 300 kg and is capable to lift up to 100-kg objects from the sea bottom.
