Pacific Fleet doctors conducted tele-council
10/26/2009 Source:Using telemedical system (TMS), military doctors conducted first in Russian Navy's history test consultations between land and Guards missile cruiser Varyag standing at moorage wall at Vladivostok on Monday, said to RIA Novosti Capt 1 rank Roman Martov, the head of Pacific Fleet Information and Public Relations Service.
"First in Russian Navy test TV comm session was conducted on Monday under program of development and introduction of new medical technologies. A patient's stomach was imaged by tele-endoscope at Varyag's sick-room. Having received sharply defined "picture", council of doctors at PF command post consulted ship's medical team headed by Lt. Col. Anatoly Soroka, PhD of Medicine and chief surgeon of PF military hospital. Real-time contact between the ship and land helped to define precise diagnosis and outline further treatment", said the interviewee.
According to him, mobile TMS deployed at missile cruiser Varyag integrates videoconferencing instruments, interfaces with auxiliary equipment and potentiality to use software applications. The system is unique and has no analogs in Russia. Its facilities are designed for telemedical consultations and telediagnosis both in real-time and time-delay modes.
"In prospect, TMSs are to be supplied to other large ships and nuc subs of Pacific Fleet. This will help ship doctors to be consulted by land colleagues and, if necessary, to operate patients on real-time basis", said Martov.
Missile cruiser Varyag is a successor of cognominal legendary first-generation warship which crew won glory at Russia-Japan War in Tsusima battle.
Nowadays cruiser Varyag is armed with powerful multipurpose attack missile system capable to defeat sea and land surface targets at long distances. Its arsenal also contains antisubmarine rocket launchers, torpedo tubes and several gun mounts with different calibers and purposes. That is why such Russian ships are called in NATO as "flattop chasers".
