Yantar shipyard to deliver Ivan Gren vessel to MoD by 2012

11/05/2009  Source: RIA Novosti

Yantar Baltic Shipyard plans to deliver amphibious ship Ivan Gren being constructed under order of Russian Defense Ministry by 2012, said Sergei Mikhailov, the head of shipyard's press service to RIA Novosti.

"The construction of hull for new RN amphibious ship is currently being completed. As for Nov 1, shipwrights had installed the last hull section. Having obtained the fore section, the hull looks integrally and assembling works come to their closing stage", said Mr. Mikhailov.

According to him, the strength hull of Ivan Gren is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.

"Then saturation works and installation of bulkheads come. In accordance with the schedule, the ship should be put afloat late 2011. And in 2012 Ivan Gren will be delivered to the orderer", added the shipyard's spokesman.

Lead ship of Project 11711 was laid down at Yantar shipyard under MoD order as early as Dec 2004, specified Mikhailov.

"Insignificant financing determined slow work rates up to 2008 when the construction was born again. The apparent increase of works on the vessel is expected in 2010", said the interviewee.

Yantar Baltic Shipyard was established in July 1945 at facilities of Koenigsberg shipyard Schichau. It is specialized on small- and medium-tonnage vessels of military and civil use; and ship repair works as well. 154 combat vessels and over 500 civil ships have been constructed at the shipyard since 1945. Presently, the government represented by OJSC Western Shipbuilding Center is majority shareholder of OJSC Yantar.
