01/25/2010

Actions taken by EMERCOM rescuers in salvage of refrigerator vessel Smolninsky suffering distress at the Sea of Okhotsk enabled the ship to avoid submersion or drift to the floe, reported Interfax on Jan 25.

According to maritime rescue coordinating center, the refrigerator accompanied by the tug reached safe area and either sea disturbance or icing-up no longer menace to it. At present, the crew cleans the vessel from ice; that helped to decrease lurch from 25 to 23 degrees.

Rescue tug Spravedlivy stands by the refrigerator; the tug shifted supply ship Smit Sibu in this mission. Supposedly, after deicing and leveling, the refrigerator will head for Sakhalin's port of Korsakov assisted by rescuers.

On Saturday, Jan 23, with the help of Mi-8 helicopter of Sakhalin's company Aviashelf eleven crewmen were evacuated from the ship suffering distress; later on, all of them were delivered to the nearest settlement Nogliki. Currently, 20 crewmembers are on board the vessel.

It was previously reported that information of the ship in distress had been received by Sakhalin branch of EMERCOM at 02.40 local time (07.40 Moscow time). In conditions of gale and low temperature, the ship was heavily iced-up and lurched up to 30º; Consequently, the risk of ship's submersion appeared.
