NATO takes into consideration Russia's intention to purchase French helicopter carrier Mistral and insists the transaction should strictly correspond to international agreements and conventions, said Wednesday NATO spokesman James Appathurai.

"We take it for granted", said Mr. Appathurai at press conference in Brussels.

NATO "understands historical background for concern [about Russia's plan to buy Mistral] of some members of the Alliance".

Multipurpose Mistral-class helicopter carrier has length about 200 meters and capable to carry six helicopters, four landing boats or two air cushion vessels and up to 450 marines.

Russia has declared its intention to buy one heli-carrier along with construction technology to build about four ships of this class.

In Nov 2009 the carrier visited St. Petersburg.

At present, French Navy has two ships of that class – Mistral and Tonnerre.

According to French media, cost of one Mistral-class helicopter carrier makes 400-500 mln euro. Reportedly, the ship will be built at STX France shipyards (former Chantiers de l'Atlantique) located in Saint-Nazaire.
