On Feb 26 Russian Navy celebrates 100th anniversary of known Soviet naval leader Sergei Gorshkov (1910-1988), Admiral of the Fleet, twice Hero of the Soviet Union. In Russia, his name is associated with creation of national ocean-going fleet.

Numerous festivities will be held in Moscow in connection with the jubilee. In the morning high naval officials, admirals, officers and veterans will take part in wreath laying ceremony at Novodevichye Cemetery. Then an exhibition devoted to the jubilee of Admiral Gorshkov will be opened in Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War. Military historical conference on Gorshkov's contribution as Navy Commander-in-Chief will be held in Navy Main HQ. Jubilee festivities program also includes Gorshkov memorial evening to be held in Moscow Concert Hall on March 3.

Sergei Georgievich Gorshkov was born on February 26, 1910 in Kamenets Podolsky, Khmelnitsky region in teacher's family. When Gorshkov turned 17 he entered Frunze Naval Academy; after graduation he served at Black Sea and Pacific fleets. During the Great Patriotic War Sergei Gorshkov actively participated in combat actions – he was commander of Azov and Danube flotillas, Black Sea Fleet's squadron, deputy commander of Novorossiysk defense region. In 1948-1951 Gorshkov served as Black Sea Fleet chief of staff and then – Black Sea Fleet Commander. Admiral Gorshkov was Soviet Navy Commander-in-Chief and Deputy Minister of Defense for about thirty years.

By estimate of naval servicemen, Sergei Gorshkov made a great contribution to organization and development of Soviet Navy; in particular, to designing and building new warships. His scientific works on naval history, tactics and operational art are still of current interest, reports ITAR-TASS.
