PF to take part in Russian naval exercise in Indian Ocean

04/05/2010

Pacific Fleet's (PF) warships will participate in large-scale naval exercise in northwest part of Indian Ocean late summer 2010. This is going to be the largest maneuvers of Russian Navy in two recent decades.

The flagship will be heavy nuclear-powered cruiser Petr Veliky. Last week she sailed off Severodvinsk along with NF auxiliary vessels and presently sails the Atlantic towards the Mediterranean Sea. The task unit is led by Capt 1 rank Sergei Zhuga.

Pacific mariners will join later; names of PF task unit ships have not been reported so far. Besides, warships of other fleets, long-range naval and strategic aviation will be involved as well.

During the exercise mariners will perform training tasks, combat integration, maneuvering, and improve nautical skills, reports Vostok Media referring to PF press service. The high emphasis will be placed on anti-terror activities in exercise sites, during passages and at anchorage. In addition, the tasks of securing Russia's economic interests will also be carried out including those in areas of Somali pirates. After maneuvers PF task unit most likely will stay for some time near Horn of Africa to secure civil shipping.
