Large ASW ship Vice Admiral Kulakov left Severnaya Verf shipyard on May 26 to hold subsequent trials. The ship had been under overhaul and modernization since 2000. The shipyard's press service denied commenting the event due to agreements with Russian Navy.

It was previously reported that weapons and life support system of Vice Admiral Kulakov were replaced during the overhaul. Electronics have been also significantly changed. Later 2009 the ship passed docking and mooring trials, although the fire occurred on Dec 4 in the ship's storeroom hindered sea trials; one person was injured in the fire.

Project 1155 large ASW ship Vice Admiral Kulakov was laid down on Nov 4, 1977 at Zhdanov Shipyard (now called Severnaya Verf) in Leningrad; launched on May 16, 1980; commissioned on Feb 9, 1982. Since 1991 the ship had been repaired at Kronshtadt Shipyard; in June 2000 Vice Admiral Kulakov was transferred to Severnaya Verf.
