Western Military District was established in Russia
10.09.2010
Western Military District was formed under armed forces' reformation program; creation of three more districts is in progress, said Russian defense minister Anatoly Serdiukov on Thursday.
"I received a report that Western Military District is ready. Other districts has not reported yet", Serdiukov said.
According to him, defense ministry's commission will convene on Sept 22 to discuss issues of organization process in Russian Armed Forces. "We will summarize results of newly established Western Military District and analyze how everything was done. Then we will give recommendations to the rest three districts", said the minister.
Western Military District which HQ is located in St. Petersburg includes control agencies of former Leningrad and Moscow military districts, Northern and Baltic fleets, and 1st Air Force and Air Defense Command.
According to defense ministry, three other new districts – Southern, Central, and Eastern – are to be fully formed and start functioning since Oct 1, 2010.
