Medvedev-Sarkozy: Mistral contract to be signed in 15 days
26.05.2011
Russian and French presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Nicolas Sarkozy agreed today that the contract on Russia' procurement of four French Mistral class landing ships would be signed in 15 days.
"Finally, we have agreed that this contract will be signed in 15 days. Two helicopter carriers will be built in France and two – in Russia", Sarkozy said after talks with his Russian counterpart. "All issues have been settled", he emphasized, reports ITAR-TASS.
"We have just agreed upon procurement of two and consequent building of other two Mistrals", confirmed Medvedev. "Indeed, we have reached accord; this contract will be tied in the nearest future. Negotiations are over. And this will promote development of our relations".
Intergovernmental agreement on procurement of Mistral class assault landing ships was signed on Jan 25, 2011 in Saint-Nazaire (France). It specified neither deadlines nor costs of the future contract; they will be settled in a separate agreement to be signed between Rosoboronexport (Russia) and DCNS (France). The contract is evaluated at least as EUR 1.5 bln.
Mistral class assault landing ship has displacement of 21,000 tons; overall length is 210 meters; speed is over 18 knots; fuel range is up to 20,000 miles; crew is 160 plus 450 marines, 13 main battle tanks or 70 wheeled trucks. Air wing consists of 16 helicopters; six of them can be simultaneously placed on the flight deck.
Design of Russian Mistrals will have some changes due to Russian defense ministry's wishes. As long as Russian-made helicopters will be based on the ships, the top deck should be "a bit higher". Besides, since the ships are supposed to operate in northern latitudes, their boards should be reinforced. This, however, will not entail serious changes in Mistral's design and equipment.
As was earlier reported by ITAR-TASS referring to Russian defense ministry, at least one Mistral class ship is to be commissioned into Pacific Fleet, and one – into Northern Fleet.
