German frigate repelled pirate attack on a merchant vessel
06.10.2010
In the evening of Oct 3 EU NAVFOR frigate Köln (German Navy) staved off capture of merchant vessel STAR II sailed through safety corridor in the Gulf of Aden, reported EU NAVFOR press-service.
STAR II sent a distress signal when the crewmen noticed a pirate motorboat pursuing them. Frigate Köln received the signal and dispatched a helicopter to help the commercial ship. When the helicopter approached the distressed vessel, pirates ceased pursuit and began to drop arms and equipment overboard. The pirate boat stopped after helicopter's cautionary fire.
When the frigate arrived to the incident site, an inspection team boarded the pirate boat; marines found only huge amount of fuel. As long as other evidence of pirate activity was thrown overboard, the search party had nothing to do but to confiscate the extra fuel and let six suspects go.
