Iran dispatches warships to the Mediterranean and the Red seas
27.01.2011
One day after breakdown of the six-lateral negotiations on Iranian nuclear problem, Tehran declared it would dispatch two warships to the Mediterranean and the Red seas, reports DEBKAfile agency.
The decision to send a task force to those waters is also a response on deployment of US aircraft carrier arrived to the Arabian Sea one week ago, reports the agency.
Iranian Navy Commander said that three or four ships would participate in the "training operation", including the first Iranian-build destroyer.
His deputy explained that the mission would last about 12 months, and then the force would be probably reinforced with submarines.
Iran has been taking part in the international anti-piracy operation since Nov 2008, so a number of Iranian warships are currently stationed in the Gulf of Aden.
