Indonesia continues procurement program for new diesel subs 11.02.2011

Indonesia is on the threshold of definitive decision on what diesel electric submarines to buy for its national navy, reports Jane's Defense Weekly referring to Antara news agency.

According to Indonesia's Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Soeparno, in the nearest time he will negotiate with defense ministry in order to determine the type of diesel subs to be purchased.

Indonesia plans to buy two conventional subs at first, and in the longer view to continue importing submarines. Cost of the first parcel is evaluated as $700 mln. By all appearances, the subs will be bought on credit.

Earlier on, Indonesian Navy presented technical requirements for needed submarines to defense ministry. Currently, the specifications are being analyzed.

In 2009 Indonesian Ministry of Defense invited French, German, Russian, and South Korean companies to compete in the tender, but later the program was shut down due to lack of funds.

Indonesia was expected to issue renewed tender in mid-2010, although the decision was postponed to 2011. As is planned, the first submarine will be built by a tender-winning company. The second sub will be constructed by PT Pal shipyard, Indonesia.

Russia and South Korea are considered leading candidates for delivery of submarines to Indonesia.

Russia offers Project 636 Kilo diesel electric submarine. South Korean Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) is about to present technical documents for two Type-209 diesel electric submarines designed in Germany.
