17.02.2010 American VSE Corporation handed over a fuel replenishment tanker to Chilean Navy which was named Almirante Montt there. According to DefPro, the ship served in US Navy since 1987 till 1996 under the name of Andrew Higgins. The contract was signed between the U.S. and Chile early 2009. Sum of transaction is not specified.
Expectedly, Almirante Montt will start sea trials in the nearest future. Once trials are finished, the vessel will arrive at Chilean shipyard ASMAR where it will be equipped with special sea refueling accessories. Then Almirante Montt will shift tanker Araucano in Chilean Navy.
A memorandum of understanding was previously tied between US and Chilean navies providing that Almirante Montt would be obliged to refuel US warships deployed at South Pacific. Tanker Almirante Montt has the length of about 206 meters; her beam is 29.7 meters; speed is up to 20 knots; the tanker's internal capacity is about 180,000 barrels of fuel.
It was reported in Nov 2009 that Chilean government had ordered US arms for $665 mln. Among procurement items were Stinger missiles for $445 mln, medium-range missiles for $145 mln and radars for $65 mln. Besides, US government considers possibility to sell Avenger SAM systems and Humvee off-roaders to Chile.
