Iran's naval forces have wrapped up large-scale Velayat-89 military maneuvers in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. Reports by Iranian News Agency Fars say the participants in the exercises were drilling border security and anti-terrorist operations at sea. Part of the drill was the testing of new weapons, including the Jamaran multi-purpose guided-missile frigate which combines traditional anti-submarine capabilities with systems to deal with surface and air threats as well. Apart from testing weaponry, the exercises tested the Iranian Navy's readiness to guarantee security in its southern territorial waters.
