At least 19 people died and up to 50 others are said to have been wounded in an Israeli navy attack on a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid convoy. The Israeli military has confirmed the death of 10 people aboard the Turkish ship that Israeli commandoes boarded.

The operation was mounted earlier today in the Mediterranean, south of Cyprus, whence the convoy with European human rights activists and 10,000 tons of cargo was making for the Gaza Strip.

The humanitarian mission organizers sought to call attention to the three-year long blockade of the Palestinian enclave. The European Union has condemned the Israeli action and has called for lifting the blockade.

The Foreign Ministries of Turkey, Greece, Spain and some other countries have summoned Israeli ambassadors for explanations. The Arab League is calling an emergency meeting on Tuesday.
