Russian-Ukrainian joint exercise Fairway of Peace 2012 started in Sevastopol.

The solemn opening ceremony was attended by joint headquarter officers, crews of ships, a marine unit, and Sevastopol city managers. Declamations were followed by hoisting of Russian and Ukrainian national flags.

Within the next few days naval mariners of the two countries will practice interaction in humanitarian and rescue operations. In particular, they will jointly search the crew of a "damaged" high-sided surface ship by naval aviation, and rescue the crew of "distressed" submarine by joint Russo-Ukrainian rescue party.

This time, the exercise is directed by Ukrainian Navy Deputy Commander Vice Admiral Sergei Yeliseyev. He is assisted by Black Sea Fleet Deputy Commander Vice Admiral Alexander Troyan.

In total, 11 ships, 6 aircraft, over 20 combat vehicles, and a joint medical detachment will be engaged in the exercise.

The Fairway of Peace 2012 exercise will last till May 25.
