First Chinese flattop to be identical with Russian one
20.10.2009 China will lay down domestic aircraft carrier. "It will be identical in design with Russian heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov. In fact, we're speaking about the copy", said Andrei Chang, Canadian expert on East Asia defense and security, editor-in-chief of Kanwa Defense Review, giving interview to RIA Novosti in Hong Kong.
That was his comment on pictures appeared in local press displaying full-size concrete model of aircraft carrier's deck near Wuhan city. That was exactly bulkhead of Admiral Kuznetsov or Varyag – similar Soviet-made ships, said the expert.
"The Chinese need to consider great number of technical nuances, make plenty of complicated researches including those related to installation and adjusting of radar equipment", explained the expert answering the question what the point of building such one-to-one model was. In particular, such matter as laying extended "webs" of cables needs thoroughgoing research, said Chang. All those are responsibilities of Scientific Research Institute 701 in Wuhan city. The vessel itself will be constructed at Shanghai shipyards.
Meanwhile, design duplication of aircraft-carrying cruiser Varyag (Admiral Kuznetsov) would break the bilateral agreement of intellectual property protection signed between Russia and China at intergovernmental MTC forum in Dec 2008, said the interviewee.
In recent years the Chinese are actively research different types of aircraft carriers. After collapse of the USSR, China purchased written-off heavy aircraft-carrying cruisers – Minsk, Kiev, and incomplete Varyag. First and second are tourist attractions in Shenzhen and Tianjin cities. Reportedly, Varyag staying in Dalian port had been reconstructed and upgraded for drills of future flattops' pilots. It is that ship being type-mate of Admiral Kuznetsov was chosen as a pattern for Chinese aircraft carrier.
Chang mentioned great assistance rendered to China by Ukraine as it not only sold incomplete Varyag at $20 mln but also provided package of technical documentation from Nikolayev shipyard.
China plans to build two aircraft carriers of this type, added Hong Kong analyst.
As for deck-based aviation, Chinese designers have created Russian-like deck-based fighter analogous to Su-33 on the basis of Soviet prototype aircraft T10K also delivered by Ukraine, said Chang.
